John
moved to East Anglia in 1970 to attend Norwich School
of Art and from there went to live by the sea at Lowestoft.
The East Anglian coastline has been central to John's
work since his arrival. The open spaces of this coastal
environment have been a rich subject in their own right
and have served increasingly as a subtly changing void
in which large figures, isolated or in small groups,
appear both monumental and vulnerable in relation to
the background.
John's paintings and pastels
are always full of optically mixed colour and full
of life from the compact and intimate to the expansive
and bustling. John is a well-respected and well collected
artist whose observations of people in moments of relaxation
are both witty and thought provoking.
